Charleston kayak fisherman Dave Jaskiewicz will be one of six members of the US delegation this November, traveling to China for the 5th annual Hobie World Kayak Fishing Championships. This year’s tournament will be held two hours south of Shanghai, at the historic Shang Lake, a 3,000 year old ancient village named after one of China’s most famous statesman and master fisherman, Jiang Shang. Previous world championships were held in the Netherlands, Australia, and the United States (Texas).
Jaskiewicz earned his spot on the US team by winning the IFA Atlantic Division Championship. In winning that tournament, Jaskiewicz also was named “Angler of the Year” for the Atlantic Division (the second time he has earned that title).
Jaskiewicz will join five fellow Americans as they compete, both individually and as a team, against kayak fishermen from 20 countries covering four continents. This will be Jaskiewicz’s first time competing in the Hobie World Championships.
Fishing in Charleston area waters, Jaskiewicz is most familiar with landing redfish, trout and flounder. But at Shang Lake, some 7,800 miles from Charleston, SC, he’ll be fishing in unfamiliar waters, in search of Chinese perch, top mouth culter and yellowcheek carp. Jaskiewicz lives in Charleston with his wife Melyssa and children Emery and Vincent.
